Shih Tzu dogs are probably one the most popular among dogs wanted by many because of their cute face and fun personality. They are fun companions for being very active and playful. Owners enjoy dressing them up and putting accessories. But because of their thick coat, regular professional grooming is a must. Professional groomers suggest that they be brought to the salon after every 4 weeks, 8 weeks at the most. But that does not mean you not doing your own dog grooming at home. You want your dear pup looking clean and tidy at all times and so you have to be prepared with your own dog grooming tools at home.
The number one grooming tools you’ll need are combs and hair brushes. Yes, you actually need more than one type if your aim is to groom your pet shih tzu the right way. Here are those combs and brushes plus their uses:
Pin brush – this is the brush you would want to use generally when grooming your pet’s coat. The bristles are made of metal with cushions on the base. The cushion will prevent the pup from being hurt if you accidentally applied too much force on the brushing strokes. Don’t use a pin brush with a bubbled or coated end as this type can damage the coat.
Slicker brush – is usually triangular or rectangular in shape with thin bent wires. This is used to remove loose hair and very good for picking apart mats.
Fine or medium tooth comb – are applied used to check the areas that need to be untangled and to look for mats that need to be picked.
Face Comb – these are fine combs intended to groom the facial hair and whiskers. This can also be used in removing eye matter.
In combing and grooming, apply some coat conditioner especially if the coat is too dry. This will lessen the static and will give you an easier time to untangle and remove mats. Saturate with conditioner the areas where mats are prominent like the arm pits, around the anus, in between toes and on the back of the thighs. By doing this quite often at home, you will be able to save some money from frequent trips to the grooming salon. But regular professional grooming is still a must, as mentioned earlier. You need to have your pets not just combed but also bathed and thoroughly cleaned especially in the ears, face and anus part. But with your own dog grooming tools at home and you doing minor grooming to your loved pet, you can be sure that you are giving your shih tzu the right amount of affection they certainly need.
