3 Ways How NOT to Name Your New Dog

Bark Collar

So you’ve just picked up your adorable little pup from the pet store or the humane society. What next? Well, one of your jobs is to come up with a name for your new dog friend. Sounds simple enough right? Is it simple – yes, but its not necessarily easy.

Naming your new furry friend can be a bit of a challenge because you have to consider a few factors. It can be a fun process but if you get it wrong it can create a number of problems. Remember this is your new best friend we’re talking about. You want to get it right.

Ok enough pressure right? So here’s a short list of what to watch out for.

1) First things first, a common mistake that people make is that they look at their dog as the cute puppy he is now rather than the grown up dog he’s going to become. Sure he’s cute and tiny now but he won’t always be that way.

So although coming up with some cute name to go along with your cute puppy may seem like a good idea and frankly to your dog it doesn’t really matter what you call him but you need to remember one thing. You’re going to have to call him when other people are listening.

You really don’t want to be out at the dog park with your full grown German Sheppard yelling “Here Cupcake!” at the top of your lungs. That could get some heads turning and not necessarily in the way you’d like.

2) Another mistake that’s sometimes made is the opposite. People create complicated names for their dog. Your dog’s name shouldn’t be any more than 2 or 3 syllables anything, more than that will just confuse your dog. Remember, to your dog the only significance of his name is that it’s the way that he knows you’re talking to him so you want to make it as easy on him as possible.

3) Lastly you want to avoid a name that is similar to a command, like stay or sit. This will just confuse him too especially if you later try to take him through any obedience training.

So remember these 3 lessons when you’re naming your new dog. Once you’ve trained your dog to respond to his name you’re not going to be able to change it easily so you need to make sure you get it right the first time.
