Shih Tzu Dogs – Find Out Why This Breed Is So Popular

The Shih Tzu is one of the world’s most popular breed of dogs and it is known for having a majestic attitude, plentiful energy, and effervescent beauty. If you are looking for an incredibly cute and playful puppy, the Shih Tzu is the dog for you. Consumers from all over the globe are getting in line to purchase this rock star breed.

China is the birth place of the Shih Tzu. Many people believe that the ShihTzu and other tiny dogs such as the Pug, and the Chin originated in Tibet and were bred in the city of Peking. The Shih Tzu’s charm did not go unnoticed by Chinese royalty because they were highly revered and protected by them. These dogs were so well guarded that the Western world did not see them until the 1930′s.

The Shih Tzu is a very popular breed among people who are looking for companionship and people who are looking to put them in dog shows. In the 1940′s the British AKC recognized the breed. Later on in the 1960′sthe United States AKC recognized the breed.

The Shih Tzu is a very sturdy and well-built breed of dog despite its small stature. It is mostly recognized by its flat face, upward growing nose, full beard and mustache, and its plentiful coat of long hair. The Shih Tzu weighs in at about nine to sixteen pounds and can reach a whopping height of 11 inches. This dog is so full of character that it will draw you to it. However, it can be unruly at times; in addition, dogs that belong to this breed can be arrogant, active, happy, and spunky.

No matter where you live whether it be in an apartment or house, the ShihTzu would fit right in because of its small size. Having a back yard is not a necessity for these little bundles of cuteness, however, they do not do well in hot climates; therefore, it would be wise to keep them where it is cool.

The Shih Tzu is one of those breeds that are high maintenance. It will take patience and dedication to care for this imperial, majestic little dog. House training a Shih Tzu is also going to be a challenge because as I mentioned earlier they can get a little unruly. Grooming these little guys is going to be chore because their sensitive eyes need to be cleaned daily and let’s not forget about their thick, long coat which will require daily grooming. However, one way to help with the rigorous grooming and upkeep of your pet is to get them professionally groomed every so often. This will help immensely with your maintenance and upkeep tasks.

Although the ShihTzu is a beautiful and majestic dog it still has its flaws like any other dog breed out there. For instance, they have common health problems that mostly affect their respiratory system. They tend to snore and wheeze a lot and are more likely to suffer eyes and ear infections as well as respiratory infections. Obesity is also a problem with this breed; therefore, do not over feed them. With all this being said, the Shih Tzu is still the ideal family pet due to its most attractive trait, which is its loving and clever personality.
